Perceptive and brilliantly written. Thanks for the reminder. In writing my own piece on MLK this day and exploring more of the spiritual roots and influences on his life, I had the opportunity to read his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” written to the nation in 1963. He could not have been more unmistakably clear: his biggest disappointment wasn’t the KKK or southern governors because he knew what to expect form them. What disappointed him was the lack of middle class, moderate whites and the church (read: mainstream, mostly white) in their lack of conscious awareness, taking action, speaking up or supporting his cause. Although MLK Day may assuage the guilt for some, I do not see it that way for more awakened Americans, black or white— but instead the day allows me (and many others) to remember the extraordinary courage he demonstrated in the face of a nation, both in its government and culture, that was both too angry and afraid of the changes he might generate. We are still not at the ‘color blind’ or post-racial society that Chief Justice Roberts imagines, but we have moved forward… with miles to go.
