Joel, your fundamentalism was extreme but your comment that it differs from the “more moderate” evangelical movement is only by a matter of a few degrees and is far more pervasive and problematic than your brand of religious upbringing. When you reference southern baptist evangelicals as “more liberal” I wonder how far out on the thin, skinny branches your church must have been! Because make no mistake modern day evangelicalism has taken a turn even further to the right matching the movement of the Republican party; yes some Republicans are leaving their party as some young evangelicals are leaving evangelical churches. But the center of the evangelical movement— as witnessed by the latter generation Falwells, Grahams and Robertsons— have all moved to a much more fundamental “us or them” mentality. Their support of Trumpism is wholly blind. In some ways there may only be a shade of difference between them and the religion you grew up on. And that is certainly disturbing.
