If evangelism had really really sold on the morals and ethics of Christianity they would have (a) endorsed The Jefferson Bible early on and (b) they would have picked Jimmy Carter in 1980 [a bona fide evangelical] over Ronald Reagan. The truth was't that they didn't want to follow the teachings of Jesus, they preferred the cult of Jesus— using him as a cudgel of superiority. They were much more attracted to the values of conservatism which included, among other things, white superiority, union dismantling, climate denying, and government as the cause of problems, never the solution. Should we be surprised that Southern Strategy/Evangelical Movement/Reaganism led to Trump? I think not.
