Dan, it is the American story that the Christian "Great Awakenings" fostered evangelicalism and is part of the American fabric. That is undeniably true. But what is often missing in the American religious story is the independent spiritual thinking of the early Unitarians, Quakers, Rosicrucians, Freemasons and Deists. These radically ecumenical, independent strains of thought were generally incompatible with Calvinistic and Puritan thinking. This spirituality of the Enlightenment is at the core of the American soul— one without guilt, one as the Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson knew was the "God within." You, like many of us, are on a more light-hearted, spiritual evolutionary journey that satisfies our innate divinity. Thanks for the post.
