As someone who attended an evangelical university (though I was not one), it’s interesting to hear your concern of hostility towards Christianity. Because while I was there, and did enjoy their fellowship, evangelicals were actively hostile to atheists; actually they called many other religions ‘cults.’ They used that word a lot. There was a lot of ‘us against them’. So with that judgment, the chickens have come home to roost and it doesn’t feel all that good, does it? So the judgment and hostility you feel from atheists— who sometimes have that same didactic air of certitude about them as evangelicals— is an awakening bit of karma, isn’t it? Your best point is “In our increasingly polarized world, we need dialogue. Neither Christians nor atheists can afford to allow the rhetoric of hatred against any group to permeate our society and become the new normal.” Amen. Let’s all hit the reset button. From here forward, I invite my Christian/Evangelical brothers and sisters to be sterling examples along the way.
